Everything You Need To Know About Tiki Bars

Tiki bars often get a bad rap, most likely because of the sweet, over-decorated drinks that people only remember from the lounges popular in the 1970s. But anyone who truly knows Tiki cocktail culture knows that the drinks are serious, the history is colorful and that when it’s done right, it’s a truly fun and sophisticated experience.

Why I love Tiki bars
When the Tiki bar experience is done well, you are meant to walk into a land that time forgot. You are there to relax, there to sip for hours. Your drinks are served in anything from a bowl shaped like a hurricane, a Tiki head or a fresh pineapple or coconut. Then there are the garnishes – edible flowers, spent limes set alight with overproof rum, dangling plastic monkeys. But the thing I like most about Tiki culture the most are the drinks themselves.

When Tiki cocktails are made well, they’re seriously good. They’re very complex with lots of details, fresh fruit and, of course, high-quality rum. Tiki is about having as much fun as possible with your cocktail, with the quality of drinks not suffering just because you have a monkey hanging off the side of your glass. Read more here.

The interiors and exteriors of tiki bars often include “tiki god” masks and carvings, grass cloth, tapa cloth and tropical fabrics, torches, woven fish traps, and glass floats, bamboo, plants, and lava stone.

How to Build an Outdoor Tiki Bar in 6 Steps

Who doesn’t love the thought of an island vacation? The sound of crashing waves, drinks with those cute little umbrellas, and of course, a Tiki Bar. But even if a tropical island vacation is beyond your budget, you can still enjoy that tropical feel by building your own Tiki Bar.

Step 1: Assemble the Base

Because this Tiki Bar is a lean-to, you’ll want to choose a location adjacent to another building. Dig a rectangular area approximately eight by six feet and three inches deep, and then fill with two inches of pea gravel to level. Use four treated 4x4s to construct an eight by six-foot frame, making sure it’s square. Beginning in the center, attach five 2x4s at 16-inch intervals to the frame, using three-inch deck screws. Check for level and square.

Step 2: Frame the Walls

Use three 4x4s fastened together with corner brackets and lag bolts for each of the back and front wall frames. The height of the walls will be determined by the pitch you want on your roof. Your front wall should be shorter than your back wall. Enlist a helper to raise the walls and toenail the 4x4s in place at the corners of the floor using three-inch deck screws. Attach the back wall to the building. Check full article here.

A Tiki Bar Is Awesome

Tiki bars are aesthetically defined by their tiki culture décor which is based upon a romanticized conception of tropical cultures. Decide on the type of bar you want to build. The following steps cover various parts of a Tiki bar, but not all of them are necessary for every project. The most basic Tiki bar, for example, would just be a bamboo-lined bar without a roof or floor.

Tiki bar themed structures spread like jungle vines, taking the form of garden-style apartments. A Tiki bar is a bar that is designed in a Polynesian theme. While a trip to the South Pacific may be out of your budget, bringing a taste of it to your home is an option.
